when applying for a job at Cornell. We look forward to hearing from you!

Time To Shine!

A little preparation will go a long way in making your application stand out.
Here are six top tips from our Cornell recruiters:

Rock Your Resume

First: make sure to read the entire job description thoroughly! Because, yes, we read every word of your resume! This is where we check that your skills and experience meet the qualifications for the job. Make sure it's accurate and concise.

Tip: When you apply, you can immediately upload your resume, which will auto-populate our application form.

Toolbox:

Craft A Compelling Cover Letter

Your cover letter should answer two questions: Why am I a great candidate for this role, and why am I applying for this role? This is your opportunity to spotlight strengths or include experiences that didn't make it into your resume.

Tip: If you're applying for multiple positions, write a separate cover letter for each job.

Shine On Social

Recruiters do check LinkedIn and other social media platforms. Make sure the information in your profile is up-to-date and consistent with your application.

Tip:  Freshen up your profile during a job search by sharing some articles or content related to your professional interests. And it doesn't hurt to ask for some recommendations to show on your profile as well.

Prepare For That Interview

Invest some time researching the college or unit where the job is located, for example, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), or Cornell IT services.  Have some questions ready for your interviewer.

Tip: Practice answering questions with a friend or in front of a mirror. Or record yourself on a practice video call. Cultivate some things to say that help you feel confident and comfortable. You've got this!

Don't Forget To Follow Up

Taking a moment to follow up with a thank you after your interview really does make a difference! It's a great way to build a relationship so that even if you don't get this job, you'll be remembered for other positions when they open.

It's best to reach out with a brief email within 24-48 hours of your interview. This is also a good time to ask any follow-up questions you may have.

Tip: Do send an individual note to every person that interviewed you.

Reach Out To Your References

Have your references ready to go early in your application process - you don't want to hold things up trying to track people down. Take some time to confirm their current titles and contact info, while letting them know about your job search. Let them know each time you submit them as a reference.

Tip:  Make sure to thank your references with a thoughtful note soon after they agree to help you, and let them know the outcome of your job search - it's important to maintain good relationships for the long term.
Please Note:
